At times, Purpose may not look at all how we may have envisioned it. We certainly may not have expected to stumble upon it by happenstance. Instead, we may have envisioned ourselves finding Purpose along a recognizable path of ease; without cracks or fissure; with all the answers laid out before us.
But as our journey takes shape, sometimes we find ourselves on a path among pebbles that cause us to stumble but not fall. We may have been thrown off course when what we’ve depended on for so long is no longer available to us. When what was once familiar becomes unfamiliar because we’re headed where we’ve never been. The place we left behind was familiar and we find ourselves having to reinvent what we do; perhaps making minor tweaks in our responsibilities and how we carry them out.
Imagine being in a job for nearly 25 years and one day your entire department is let go under the guise of trimming the fat. But your company was losing so much money that they could no longer afford you anyway. So, they paid you to leave and let you go. And off you went to seek greener pastures
Sure, you were shocked. You may have even been angry because you didn’t see it coming. Or, it may have been a relief. But after the initial shock wears off, you plant your feet on shaky ground and you may flounder around unsettled for a while. Eventually, you land on your feet. And when you do, there is a door of opportunity right before you. The doors swing wide open and in walks opportunities that you had no idea existed. It’s almost as if like they had your name on them. Soon after, project after project follow and you become immersed in work that you love. And as soon as you finish one project, another one comes your way. You’re productive. You love what you do, and it’s fulfilling because you are making an impact in that world with meaningful work and powerful products. But you never would have known about these opportunities had the door never opened.
That’s how Purpose is. God makes room for the gifts and talents that He blesses us with. He is awaiting on our availability and our “yes”. He already knows the ending and knew that you would get to the point where your Purpose and Ordained Usefulness would come to bear.
As I’ve watched others make the transition from what they were dependent upon to an opportunity that depended on their core skills and talents, they learned to accept change and became focused on finishing. That’s when Purpose found its dwelling place.
